Uber to stop overcharging riders in emergencies

The car service app Uber has promised to stop “surge pricing” during emergencies and natural disasters, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced on Tuesday.

The app can still double or triple its rates during regular storms and holidays.

The company was widely criticized for surge pricing during superstorm Sandy.

Uber announced Monday it was slashing rates 20 percent on its black cars to make them cheaper than yellow cabs.

The move also comes as its national competitor, the ride-sharing app Lyft, launches in Brooklyn and Queens Friday.
