A cop who received the NYPD’s hero Combat Cross — then allegedly stumbled drunkenly into a woman’s home in his underwear the next day and pummeled her — has been arrested in the case, police sources said.
Officer Eugene Donnelly, 27, was charged with burglary and assault Monday after allegedly busting down the door of the woman’s apartment in Woodlawn in The Bronx at 5:30 a.m. June 11 and punching her repeatedly as she laid in her bed, sources said.
A day before, the officer had donned his dress blues and white gloves to shake Police Commissioner Bill Bratton’s hand and receive his award, the department’s second-highest honor.
The medal is given to cops who perform “extraordinary acts of heroism” while facing armed attackers who put their lives in immediate danger. Donnelly earned his by arresting a shooter who had opened fire on him in The Bronx in May 2012.
After the medal ceremony, the cop went out to celebrate and became blind drunk, passing out at a friend’s house in Woodlawn, sources said.
He awoke and wandered outside in his underwear and busted down the door of the 30-year-old neighbor’s apartment, pummeling her repeatedly before finally helping himself to her fridge, where he guzzled milk from the container, sources said. He then fled.
Police circulated a “Wanted” poster with his image from the building’s surveillance cameras before realizing the suspect was one of their own, sources said.
Donnelly was immediately stripped of his gun and badge and put on modified duty. The investigation wrapped up Monday morning, and he was cuffed on the charges.
