State officials spoke out in support of Israel just before boarding a plane bound for the crisis-stricken region.
Governor Andrew Cuomo kicked off the afternoon news conference, saying his connection to Israel is strengthened in part because New York is home to the second-largest Jewish population in the world, behind Israel.
Other state officials traveling with the delegation include Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Co-Senate leaders Dean Skelos and Jeffery Klein.
Cuomo says the bi-partisan group is aiming to solidify the state’s relationship with Israel.
“Our message is simple and is clear: we stand with Israel and we support Israel’s right to defend itself in this conflict,” Cuomo said.
“I’m certain that this mission will reinforce the highly-valued and long-standing partnership that exists between New York and Israel,” said Silver.
NY1 Statehouse Reporter Zack Fink will follow the governor throughout his trip and will file reports from the ground in Israel.
