Balloons Fly In Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The balloons are flying in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

There were concerns that high winds would prevent the lovable inflatable balloons from flying in this year’s parade, but Thursday morning was calm enough for the balloons to make the journey through Manhattan.

Some spectators lined up along the parade route as early as 4 a.m.

There are four new balloons at this year’s parade. New additions include a new Snoopy and Woodstock, Spongebob Squarepants, Toothless from the film “How to Train Your Dragon” and characters from the show “Adventure Time.”

On Wednesday night, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said all precautions are being taken by the NYPD to make sure the balloons fly safely.

“We have a police sergeant with each of the big balloons, and based on what the winds are at any one point in time, we can have them higher or lower or, if it got really bad, we pull them off to the side, which we don’t think is going to happen,” Bloomberg said.

The parade route starts at 77th Street, goes down Central Park West, and then shifts over to Sixth Avenue, heading down to 34th Street. It ends in front of Macy’s.

Along with the balloons, there are floats, marching bands and 900 clowns to entertain all of the 3.5 million spectators that are estimated to line the parade route.
