On a day of giving thanks, a hard-working bunch in Brooklyn has much to be grateful for.
At the Peter Jay Sharp Center for Opportunity, a Doe Fund outpost in Williamsburg, Thanksgiving dinner was made for the people who work and live there, as well as others in need around the city.
Since 1985, the non-profit has provided the homeless and formerly incarcerated with transitional work and housing.
“Usually, Thanksgiving is a very festive day. So many of the men who live here and so many of the men who work in the kitchen have so much to be thankful for. Many of us had a rough road, but we made it to the Doe Fund, and as a result we’ve been able to combine our two passions: food and service,” said Gino Dalesandro, director of food services at the Doe Fund.
In all, Doe Fund chefs, with volunteers, cooked up 3,400 pounds of turkey, 400 pounds of sweet potatoes and cornbread stuffing, 60 pounds of glazed carrots, and 20 gallons of gallons of gravy.
