He was a little dehydrated and covered in debris, but a pit bull puppy named Dexter was happily reunited with his National Guard owner after living for nine days in the rubble from an Illinois tornado.

Six-month-old Dexter had been separated from Jacob Montgomery, a member of the Illinois National Guard, since Nov. 17.

Rescuers, carrying hot dogs as bait, were able to coax Dexter from the ruins on Tuesday after previous searches had turned up nothing.

He apparently survived by eating snow and lapping up puddles.

A neighbor looking for a missing cat teamed up with Rescuing Animals in Need and found the dog. They sent Montgomery a Facebook message telling him that Dexter was safe.

“He said, ‘I’ve got your dog right here,”‘ Montgomery recalled in a statement released by the Illinois National Guard.

“As soon as Dexter saw me, his tail started going.” The pooch was in relatively good shape. “The vet said he has no real injuries – just a few scrapes and cuts,” Montgomery said.

“He was malnourished, but he’s going to be fine.”

The Washington, Ill., twister was one of several that swept through the state. Six people were killed.

Montgomery’s third-floor apartment was demolished.

He was working at his civilian job in Peoria when the storm hit. He has been staying with a friend since the tornado blew through.
