A grease fire Friday night chased diners out of a landmark Midtown restaurant that has served Bill and Hillary Clinton and claims to be the city’s oldest eatery still owned by the founding family, the FDNY said.
The blaze broke out at about 6:20 p.m. inside Barbetta Restaurant on West 46th Street near 8th Avenue, the FDNY said.
“The fire started in the grease in the duct work and the grease in the kitchen,” said FDNY chief Dan Donoghue, who said the inferno took about 50 minutes to extinguish.
“There were pockets of fire that took awhile to get to.”
The popular restaurant – where Mary J. Blige has also hosted a dinner and silent auction – will remain closed until the fire damage can be repaired, said owner Laura Maioglio.
“I was in the dining room when I heard the chef shouting fire, fire. We immediately evacuated everyone,” said Maioglio.
“It’s very bad because it hits us at the busiest time of the year.”
Nobody was injured in the fire, the FDNY said.
