The Brooklyn mom seriously injured in a fatal hit-and-run crash hasn’t yet come to terms with the awful news that one of her young daughters is dead, a family member told The Post on Friday.
Marsha Landias is “alert and talking” but doesn’t recall being mowed down Wednesday in the horrific crash in Mill Basin that killed her 12-year-old daughter, Joey Sellers, and left her other daughter, Charlie Sellers, 9, in a coma.
“We told her we lost Joey,” said Landias’ mother, Marie, outside Kings County Hospital. “I don’t think she understands that yet. She keeps asking us, ‘How is Joey doing?’ ”
Marie Landias said her daughter is “doing much better and improving” after being struck by the stolen minivan that police say was driven by pill-popping criminal Robert DeCarlo, 26. She underwent surgery for serious injuries and remains heavily sedated, a family friend said.
“She can only remember the events that happened before the accident,” said Marie Landias.
Meanwhile, her surviving daughter, Charlie, remains unconscious, relatives said.
“Charlie is in a coma,” said the girls’ grand aunt, Elsie Chery, 52.
Chery remembered Joey as an “excellent student” who even starred in a play at Brooklyn College two weeks ago. She said Joey also loved her dog, Sasha.
DeCarlo allegedly slammed into Landias and the two girls, who were walking on Flatlands Avenue, after he lost control and jumped a curb.
Charlie suffered a traumatic brain injury and underwent surgery Thursday at New York Presbyterian Children’s Hospital, according to a family member.
Landias was recovering at Kings County Hospital.
Charges against DeCarlo, who was out on bail after allegedly mugging an elderly woman, include manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. This time, he was held without bail.
