After a wet start to the holiday weekend, New Yorkers are putting on their bathing suits and heading to the beach today.
The surf is much calmer at Rockaway Beach, a sign that Hurricane Arthur is gone from our shores.
But don’t let your guard down just yet as rip currents are still a threat.
There are signs and red flags along the beach warning swimmers about the danger.
Despite the warnings, beach-goers say they’re looking forward to a day of fun in the sun.
“We have an apartment nearby. So we just came for the fireworks and then we knew today would be a good day for the beach,” said one beach-goer.
“It’s like you’re getting away from New York but you’re only 30 minutes out. So it really has that beach feel, kinda of like a beach town feel. It’s getting it back more now, after Sandy,” another said.
The Parks Department says the majority of beaches closed for hurricane replenishment should be open this weekend between Beach 60th and Beach 149th streets.
If you go swimming at the beach, make sure to stay near a lifeguard.
If you get stuck in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore and wait for the current to release you.
