The United States’ dreams of winning the World Cup end in a heartbreaking loss to Belgium—despite that, fans are staying true. NY1′s Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.
The highlight of the match for team USA came as seconds wound down in extra time.
Julian Green Scored the only goal for the U.S., bringing the match to 2-1.
Fans of the U.S. men’s national team packed in under the Manhattan bridge for a watch party.
“Energy is amazing,” said one fan.
Belgium scored first in the opening seconds of extra time and then put another in the net minutes later, though.
You can see the drama on fan’s faces after each U.S. save, or shot on goal.
Some left before it ended.
“I can’t watch them lose,” said one fan.
But they missed the U.S. goal in Brazil, and this here in Brooklyn: an army veteran exchanging flags with a citizen of Belgium.
“We have fun with our United States friends and we share a good match together,” the Belgium fan said.
“Whether it’s not us or another team, it’s good to see the camaraderie,” a U.S. fan said.
A win for each fan perhaps—and despite this loss, they say the the team is still a winner in their eyes.
“I’m proud of them, that we made it this far. I’m so proud of them,” one fan said.
“I’m really happy that they even, like, got this far and I see that they, like, improved,” said one young fan.
“I feel like the United States kind of proved themselves in the group stage because they were in a crazy hard group but they still made it through, and they played great,” another said.
Now Belgium goes on the play Argentina in the quarter finals on July 5 and the DUMBO Improvement district will put on another watch party for that under the Manhattan Bridge, but that party probably won’t get as large.
