With the start of the school year just two days away, more speed cameras are going up near city schools as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s “Vision Zero” safety initiative.
Speaking outside P.S. 95 in the Bronx Tuesday, the mayor was joined by city Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg and other elected officials Tuesday to announce the ongoing installation of the technology that aims to reduce pedestrian deaths.
City officials say 23 cameras are already in place and 117 others are on the way. And while some of the cameras will be fixed, others will be mobile and placed in city DOT vehicles.
A total of 140 are expected to be in place by next year.
“Every driver has to understand they hold other peoples’ lives in their hands, they hold childrens’ lives in their hands. That’s why we’re going to work every day to get that point across to make this a safer city, to end the scourge of senseless traffic deaths,” De Blasio said.
Speeders who get caught will get a $ 50 ticket in the mail.
So far, the cameras already in place have raised over $ 9 million in city revenue.
