Arrest Made In Connection With Deadly Bronx Hit-And-Run Crash

A 22-year-old man is under arrest as police continue to investigate a deadly hit-and-run crash in the Bronx.

Police say Henry Lawrence faces weapons and menacing charges.

They are still looking into how exactly Lawrence is connected to the crash in which 32-year-old Derrick Callender was hit by a Toyota Sienna that jumped a curb.

Police say that they do know that Lawrence drove the Sienna to East 233rd Street and double parked in front of a liquor store.

Investigators say he threatened the store’s owner with a knife and left.

Sometime shortly thereafter, according to police, Callender was hit and killed by that Toyota.

Family members told NY1 that it happened right in front of their eyes.

“No, he didn’t know what was going on,” said one family member. “He dropped a DVD, he picked it up, and the car just took him.”

Police believe that the same Toyota had been driving around the block at high speeds several times before the incident.

After hitting Callender, the driver tried to make a getaway but slammed into a construction fence, according to police.

Police say that the three people in the car fled the scene.

Police believe that Callender was not the intended target.
