Anthony Byrd, 59, of Brooklyn was charged with criminally negligent homicide, assault, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and other counts. The police said Mr. Byrd had remained at the scene and did not appear to have been impaired.
On Sunday the police identified the boy as Lucian Merryweather of Brooklyn. He was pinned under the car and died at the scene of the crash, the police said.
Three other pedestrians were also struck: two women — ages 28 and 48 — and a 5-year-old boy. The younger woman and the boy were taken to Kings County Hospital Center with minor injuries, the police said.
The police said the S.U.V., a 2000 Ford Expedition, was traveling west on DeKalb Avenue about 12:50 p.m. when the driver tried to make a left turn onto Clermont Avenue. The intersection sits on a popular thoroughfare lined with several bars and restaurants, a few blocks from Fort Greene Park.
As he was turning, the driver hit a parked car, a 2004 Ford Taurus, while trying to avoid two pedestrians in the crosswalk, the police said. The S.U.V. then jumped the curb onto the sidewalk on the southwest corner of the intersection, striking a building and another parked car, a 2007 Cadillac Escalade.
The vehicle accelerated and headed the wrong way on DeKalb Avenue, then sideswiped a third vehicle, a 2007 Chrysler Pacifica. It continued toward the northeast corner of the intersection, where the 28-year-old woman was struck. The S.U.V. jumped the curb again and hit three other pedestrians, including the boy who died.
