LICH Ambulances Return Following Admissions Halt Earlier This Week

Brooklyn’s Long Island College Hospital resumed ambulance service Friday after it was stopped earlier this week, but it will only accept non-critical patients.

According to the city fire department, ambulances resumed at 4 p.m.

Hospital officials blamed a staffing shortage for the disruption which began Wednesday.

They say they detoured ambulances away from the troubled facility to ensure it did not receive patients beyond its capabilities.

SUNY Downstate, which runs the hospital, says it will bring in doctors from other institutions to help out and maintains it’s making every effort keep up current service levels.

Residents and LICH supporters met last night to discuss the latest developments and say they’ll keep fighting to keep the hospital open.

“So we’re very hopeful that while SUNY plays the game, we come out. We’re very strong, the different groups. That we are gonna win each fight. It’s another step,” said Patients for LICH Founder Susan Raboy.

“Tens of thousands of lives depend on LICH it’s been here for 155 years. Neighborhood grew up around it. And it’s gonna be here to stay another 155 years. We are not backing down,” said Julie Semente, a LICH registered nurse.

SUNY Downstate has been trying to close LICH for months, claiming the hospital is losing millions of dollars.

But a judge put closure plans on hold in June.
