Officials at Brooklyn’s Long Island College Hospital said that they’ll restore ambulance service Friday after cutting it Wednesday night.
They blamed a staffing shortage for the disruption, and they said that they detoured ambulances away from the facility to ensure that it did not receive patients beyond its capabilities.
SUNY Downstate, which runs the hospital, said that it’ll bring in doctors from other institutions to help out, and maintained that it’s making every effort to keep up current service levels.
Residents and LICH supporters met Thursday night to discuss the latest developments.
They said that they’ll keep fighting to keep the hospital open.
“So we’re very hopeful that while SUNY plays the game, we come out – and we’re very strong, the different groups – that we are going to win each fight,” said Susan Raboy, the founder of Patients for LICH. “It’s another step.”
“Tens of thousands of lives depend on LICH,” said Julie Semente, a registered nurse at LICH. “It’s been here for 155 years. Neighborhood grew up around it. And it’s going to be here to stay another 155 years. We are not backing down.”
SUNY Downstate has been trying to close LICH for months, claiming that the hospital is losing millions of dollars, but a judge put closure plans on hold in June.
