New Yorkers Want Promises Kept As New Administration Takes Shape

New Yorkers were not shy about their thoughts on Tuesday’s election results and what the de Blasio administration faces going forward, including the need for job creation and maintaining public safety. NY1′s Vivian Lee filed the following report.

Queens residents were full of great expectations for the city’s mayor-elect Bill de Blasio Wednesday, many of them with the economy on their minds.

“Raises, jobs,” said one New Yorker.

“Better economy, better job market. Open up more jobs across New York City in all five boroughs,” said another New Yorker.

Another high hope is that de Blasio keeps working New Yorkers moving efficiently.

“Better assistance with the MTA. The MTA where I live, it’s horrible,” said one New Yorker.

“I think infrastructure of this city has really degraded under the last 12 years of the reign of Bloomberg, and I’m really pleased that we have a new mayor that is focusing on infrastructure, public projects,” said another New Yorker.

Those who voted for him were not surprised at de Blasio’s whopping margin of victory – the largest of any non-incumbent mayor in the city’s history. Some say his campaign was that good and may have contributed to another record – the lowest voter turnout for a mayoral election since 1917.

“I think people probably just felt it was already decided and it was already in the bag,” noted one New Yorker.

“Maybe a lot of people felt they didn’t have a reason to vote. Which is a bad thing,” said another New Yorker. “It could have been a whole lot better if he had more of a turnout.”

A lingering concern for one woman as she waited in the morning darkness for her bus is that crime does not go up, since de Blasio pledged to replace Ray Kelly as police commissioner.

“I can walk the streets now because of Kelly thank God, but I don’t know who’s going to come and do the same. You could walk into any part of the city now, walk up into the Bronx and anything. But now, I don’t know what he’s going to do,” said the woman.

Considering de Blasio won over all key demographic groups, it’s not surprising the overwhelming majority of people NY1 stopped said they were not surprised at de Blasio’s victory. And those who voted for him said they don’t want any surprises in the years to come, just for the mayor-elect to keep his campaign promises.
