A police officer injured when a NJ Transit train crashed into his squad car Thursday morning has been released from the hospital, officials confirmed.

The officer belonging to the Bridgewater Township Police Department in New Jersey suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A transit spokesman declined to identify the officer or detail his injuries.

The accident happened around 11:50 a.m. as the train, empty of passengers, traveled through the Polhemus Ave. crossing in Bridgewater.

The officer was already in the area to investigate reports of trespassers on the tracks. At the time of the accident, the cruiser was along the train’s “right of way,” meaning it was “adjacent to the tracks,” New Jersey Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. told the Daily News.

The left side of the car bore the brunt of the train’s impact, sustaining significant damage.

The police officer inside the car was rushed to a Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

The train was en route to the Raritan Yard when the crash occurred. None of the crew members sustained injuries.

NJ Transit had to cancel the 11:49 a.m. train from Bound Brook.

As of 2 p.m., train service was operating on or close to schedule, Durso said.
