Joy, a cat rescued after Hurricane Sandy, was adopted by another storm survivor. She was the last animal cared for in the ASPCA’s temporary shelter to be adopted.
A cat rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy has found a new home with a fellow storm survivor.
Robert Curran, who was forced from his Rockaway home after Sandy, adopted the white kitty named Joy after the ASPCA put out a special plea in the News two weeks ago.
Joy was the last of 300-plus animals cared for in the ASPCA’s special temporary storm shelter.
“Every cat deserves a home,” said Curran, 39, an assistant professor of anatomy and physiology at Brooklyn College. “I have a home.”
Curran grew up with cats and dogs, but this is his first time solo with a pet.
“She’s a bit hesitant, she’s getting used to things,” Curran said of the shy but playful feline. “It took me months to get used to my apartment.”

The ASPCA and other rescue groups provided shelter and medical assistance to animals picked up off the streets during and after the storm.
Joy was found in Gravesend by NYC Animal Care and Control officers who brought her to the temporary shelter.
“I expected a lot less of her in one week knowing her story,” Curran said. “She was rescued and then had a change of environment. I figured she would be in the closet for a week.”
Instead Joy greets him after work — even if she sometimes has to be bribed with a treat or two.
Curran said he felt another connection to Joy. His sister, a veterinarian in Florida, worked in the ASPCA emergency boarding facility at the same time Joy was there.
“This is the perfect circle for me and her,” he said.
