Adriano Espaillat announced his intent to run for Congress Thursday.
Adriano Espaillat scooped up another endorsement for his run for Congress from fellow state Sen. Gustavo Rivera — in an area with traditionally low voter turnout.
Espaillat (inset) and Rivera (D-Bronx) visited businesses on W. Fordham Road in the Bronx on Saturday, trying to build momentum for a second campaign to unseat Rep. Charles Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District.

“I hope this campaign will encourage people to participate and really create some excitement in the neighborhood that a new voice is coming to represent them in Washington,” Espaillat (D-Manhattan) said.
During the state senator’s first attempt to oust Rangel in 2012, voter turnout in the Bronx was dismally low — of roughly 62,000 registered Democrats in that part of the district, only about 5,000 cast a ballot during the primary.

Espaillat said he is “looking forward” to being endorsed by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. soon. The borough president’s office declined to comment.
Espaillat announced his intent to run Thursday, and has the support of City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
