Public Advocate Letitia James filed a discrimination complaint Friday against the owners of Stonehenge Village.

Public Advocate Letitia James formally filed a complaint Friday against the owners of an Upper West Side apartment complex that has barred its rent stabilized tenants from the building’s gym.

The Commission on Human Rights complaint against Stonehenge Village cites a 2008 law prohibiting discrimination based on income. It was established to protect tenants in the Section 8 voucher program, but James says it may apply in this case.

“The policy by Stonehenge to deny access to the gym to rent stabilized tenants appears to be a violation of the anti-discrimination laws of the city,” wrote James.

The Commission is investigating the matter and has asked Stonehenge Partners to provide information about other properties owned by the company as well as a breakdown of the tenant composition within their buildings.

Tenants at the 417-unit complex on W. 97th St. were told last month that the new gym would be for market-rate tenants only.
