Mayor Drops Lawsuit Challenging “Bias-Based” Profiling

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday announced the city will dismiss its lawsuit against legislation which gives New Yorkers the right to file lawsuits in order to stop “bias-based” profiling in law enforcement.

It was challenged by the Bloomberg administration in 2013.

De Blasio, who was one of the original sponsors of Local Law 71, is now taking the first step to restore its power.

The announcement is a victory for those who oppose stop-and-frisk.

In a statement, the mayor says he is working to strengthen the relationship between community members and police.

He adds, “There is absolutely no contradiction in protecting the public safety of New Yorkers and respecting their civil liberties. In fact, those two priorities must go hand-in-hand.”

The mayor’s office says the NYPD has sent guidance to officers about how to comply with the law.
