Mayor Proposes Doubling Size of After-School Program

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday released details about his proposed after-school program expansion.

The announcement comes just a day before the Mayor heads to Albany looking for approval for his controversial plan to fund the program by taxing wealthy New Yorkers.

The proposal would more than double the size of the program, offering space to 120,000 students in 512 schools.

“We’re going to upgrade the slots across the board, adding hours and additional days so that every child has the opportunity to get up to 540 hours of enrichment, 540 hours per year of enrichment, and the model we’ll use is a proven model that will pair school principals with community based organizations and they’ll come into schools and in effect extend the learning day by an additional three hours,” De Blasio said.

City officials say this and the universal pre-K program could be in jeopardy if the plan is not approved by Albany.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says there is room in his budget to fund universal pre-K across the state and does not want the mayor to implement his tax plan.
