“I’m proud of all five teams,” said Marlon Anuran, an engineering teacher at the Fresh Meadows school. “Their hard work paid off.”

The teams began building the robots in September, he said. The mechanical creations are tasked with picking up blocks and placing them in baskets. Three dozen teams qualified at local events held recently across Long Island and New York City.

The winners will advance to next month’s East Super-Regional Tournament in York Pa., sponsored by For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, a national group based in Manchester, N.H.

“It’s super exciting,” said junior Huan Ying Zhang, 17, of Woodside, whose all-girls team Titanium Tigers qualified for the event. “I hope that my team makes it to the [next tournament.]”
