Annual Macy’s Fireworks Show Lights Up East River

Despite a gloomy start to the holiday, thousands of spectators lined up along the East River Friday night to catch a glimpse of the 38th annual Macy’s fireworks show.

It was the first time since 2008 the show could be seen from Manhattan’s East Side and Brooklyn.

Designers of the spectacle put the majesty of the Brooklyn Bridge to use as streams of bright fireworks cascaded down along the span.

Three barges also shot off some 40,000 effects.

• Post offices, government buildings, city offices, courts, banks, stock markets and schools are closed

• There’s also no mail delivery, and no garbage or recycling pickup

• Subways, buses, the Long Island Rail Road and the Staten Island Railway are running on a Saturday schedule; Metro-North is running on a Sunday schedule

• The Staten Island Ferry is running on a holiday schedule

• Alternate side parking and meters are suspended

Some of the best viewing spots were along the FDR Drive in Manhattan and in Brooklyn Bridge Park and along the Brooklyn Promenade.

The Brooklyn Bridge will also be closed through 1 a.m.
