Politicans claim no extra income outside meager salary

ALBANY — Mother and daughter legislators who together earn less than $ 200,000 a year entered zeroes on every entry of their latest financial-disclosure forms.

Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo and her daughter, City Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo, each reported no stocks, no bonds, no property, no outside income more than $ 1,000 and no outstanding loans or debts that would trigger disclosure.

“How can I be wrong when I am honest?” the assemblywoman told The Post when asked about her spare lifestyle on a base salary of $ 79,500 a year. “I don’t have anything to report, so I didn’t.”

That wasn’t the case last year, when the Bronx state legislator reported hitting the jackpot in an upstate casino for more than $ 28,000.

Her daughter, the council member, offered a more terse explanation about why she has no holdings on her salary of $ 112,500.

“I disclosed what I’m required to disclose,” declared Maria Arroyo.

Last year, she disclosed the hiring of her son, Ricardo Aguirre Jr., as a campaign consultant who earned $ 55,000 of the $ 102,000 she received in campaign contributions for a primary she ended up winning by a 2-to-1 margin.

Records show the Arroyos are members of an exclusive club — only four of the other 212 state-elected officials reported living entirely off their salaries.

They included Assemblywoman Gabriela Rosa (D-Manhattan), who resigned her post last week after admitting a 1996 sham marriage to become a US citizen.

This is the only the second year state lawmakers had to file outside income for themselves and their spouses. It was also the second straight year Assemblywoman Annette Robinson (D-Brooklyn) reported zero outside earnings.

She did not return calls to explain her finances.

A spokesman for state Sen. James Sanders (D-Queens) said the Rockaways legislator doesn’t have time to hold down a second job. “This is all he does,” said the spokesman.

State Sen. Bill Perkins declined to comment, other than to say his filing was accurate.
