Police Seek Man in Wheelchair After Midtown Thefts

So far, his targets have been women, nabbing their handbags while they are distracted by an $ 18 martini or $ 12 mojito.

While some of the pickpockets who prowl high-end joints around town try to dress the part to attract as little attention as possible, the police say this suspect was noticeable because he did not stand.

In at least one surveillance video, the thief is shown leaving the scene of the crime in a wheelchair.

The police released photographs of the suspect late Thursday night and said on Friday morning that they have not yet made an arrest.

They could not say if the man was truly disabled or merely using the wheelchair as a cover.

The first robbery took place at 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 19, when he stole a bag from a 42-year-old woman at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square. He made off with a wallet, an iPad, a necklace and cash, the police said.

He struck again just before midnight on Aug. 30, when he rolled over to a 34-year-old woman at Nobu 57 restaurant on West 57th Street and snatched her Coach bag from underneath the bar, the police said. This time he got credit cards and money.

Four days later, on Sept. 3, he victimized a 40-year-old woman at Havana Central Restaurant in Midtown who had left her bag on her chair when she got up to dance.

When she returned, the purse was missing.

The police said that after at least one of the robberies, the man used stolen credit cards to buy himself pizza.
