Mariano Rivera threw his last pitch at Yankee Stadium Thursday night.
Rivera entered Thursday night’s game against the Rays in the eighth inning to a loud ovation.
The Yankees were trailing at the time.
The all-time leader in saves rarely comes into a game with the Yankees behind, but an exception was made Thursday since it was his last time pitching in New York.
The 43-year-old retired all four batters he faced.
Then, with two outs in the top of the ninth, longtime teammates Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter came out to the mound to take him out of the game so he could leave to another, even longer ovation.
The Yankees lost the game 4-0.
The Bombers’ final three games of the season will be in Houston this weekend.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he may let Rivera play an inning in center field in one of those games.
Girardi also announced that Pettitte will make his final career start on Saturday.
Pettitte pitched for three years in Houston before re-joining the Yankees in 2007.
