Cuomo Announces Aid For Homes Damaged By Soil Movement During Irene, Lee, Sandy

Some New Yorkers looking for help in repairing their storm-damaged homes are getting support from Albany.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that houses damaged by soil and earth movements during Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee and Hurricane Sandy will receive aid from the state’s Housing Recovery Program.

Some of the people who previously applied to the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program were turned down for compensation because their homes were not directly damaged by floodwaters.

Cuomo said that the state’s new program will help hundreds of people left in limbo by FEMA.

In a statement, Cuomo said, “…it simply does not make sense that some New Yorkers, who were just as hard hit by the same storms as others, cannot be compensated for their losses. That is why the State is stepping up to bridge this unfair gap in insurance coverage.”
