Anwar al-Awlaki, who died in a U.S. airstrike in 2011, guided terrorist mouthpiece Lawal Babafemi.
Brooklyn federal prosecutors have indicted a Nigerian national who was a member of Al Qaeda’s propaganda wing in the Arabian Pensinsula.
Lawal Babafemi pleaded not guilty Friday to charges that he was paid nearly $ 9,000 to provide material support to a terrorist organization between January 2010 and February 2011.
Babafemi, 33, allegedly assisted in the Al Qaeda’s media operations under the direction of now deceased propaganda honcho Anwar al-Awlaki, including the publication of its on-line magazine “Inspire.”
Al-Awlaki was killed in a U.S. air strike in Yemen in 2011. Boston Marathon terrorists Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were reportedly inspired to build pressure cooker bombs through the magazine.

Prosecutors allege that Babefemi received the money to recruit other English speakers to join the terror group.
“The defendant threw his efforts behind Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s media, recruitment, and weapons training campaigns in an effort to strengthen the terrorist group’s grip on the region and extend its reach throughout the world,” said Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch.
Babafemi has been jailed in Nigeria since August 2011.
Federal Judge John Gleeson ordered Babafemi held without bail.
