East Village Party Goer Seriously Injured After Staircase Gives Way

One man was hospitalized and dozens of people rescued after a rooftop party in Manhattan came to a sudden end early Sunday morning.

Fire officials say 30 to 40 people were on the roof of a seven-story building located at 159 Second Avenue in the East Village.

Around 1:30 a.m., officials say the staircase leading to the roof collapsed, sending a young man crashing down three stories.

Witnesses say he fell right through.

“He was drunk and he was jumping down the stairs and he fell through the stairs, that’s what happened,” said one party goer.

“Three stories, and literally we just saw blood coming out, I don’t know if it was coming out of his nose,” said another party goer.

The victim was taken to Bellevue in serious condition.

Meanwhile, damage to the stairs left dozens stranded on top of the Second Avenue building.

They were rescued by firefighters.

The building was eventually declared safe and did not have to be fully evacuated.
