TIME photographer uses social media to identify subjects of 9/11 photo

Patrick Witty

Photographer Patrick Witty has identified the six main people in the front row of his dramatic 9/11 photo thanks to help from social media. “Anthony, Rodger, Benjamin, Ramzy, Alfredo, & Wanda,” he wrote on Twitter.

He’s finally able to put names to their faces, thanks to the incredible power of social media.

Twelve years after taking an iconic photograph of New Yorkers watching in horror as the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed, Patrick Witty made a major breakthrough.

The international picture editor for TIME magazine told the Daily News that since posting the photo to social media in 2012, six of the people in the black and white photograph have been identified.

From tireless crowd-sourcing through his Facebook page, Twitter feed, a Reddit thread, and articles from several news outlets, including the Daily News, Witty has identified six people.

Up until this week, Witty had confirmed the identities of two of the photo’s subjects, including businessman Benjamin Tabile, the man in a suit and tie with round glasses.

When asked why he chose to turn his lens, a Leica M6 loaded with black and white film, away from the tower, Witty said it was due in part to turn away from the chaos in front of his eyes.

“I could no longer bear seeing bodies falling to the ground. I turned around and saw a sea of faces that truly captured what it was like to be there.”Everyone, including myself, started running,” he told The News in a previous interview.

“I didn’t get a chance to ask anyone their names. I’ve always wanted to know what happened to everyone after (the tower collapsed).”
