State Education Commissioner John King said many of the concerns expressed about the new schools curriculum can only be addressed through legislation.

After protests around the state over the new tougher Common Core curriculum, Gov. Cuomo appears to have taken note.

Speaking on Staten Island Monday, he called significant “elements” of the transition to the curriculum “problematic.”

“It’s something we’re watching very closely, and it’s something that might be the subject of legislative changes next year,” he said, while noting the state Education Department is not under his authority.

“It’s not anything that I control, so we are watching it.”

His remarks appeared to open the door on addressing the city and state unions’ request to put the brakes on new teacher evaluations — until schools have adapted to the new curriculum. Changes to teacher evaluations could require legislative action.

State Education Department officials defended the drive toward new higher standards, while acknowledging the agency can’t act without the Legislature on a key element of the protest.

“Many of the concerns expressed at the forums we’re holding around the state can only be addressed through legislative change, but we will continue to work with all stakeholders to make thoughtful adjustments,” said state Education Commissioner John King.
