Senator Charles Schumer wants the ban on plastic guns built by the latest technology to stay as is.
He wants to extend the Undetectable Firearms Act past its current expiration date of December 9.
Schumer says that he’ll attach legislation to one of several upcoming bills in the Senate.
He says it’s more important than ever as the technology becomes cheaper and more accessible.
He says that online instructions on how to build the guns using a 3-D printer have been downloaded more than 100,000 times.
He says that that could “allow any person with an internet connection and a little over $ 1,000 to produce a gun that is essentially undetectable.”
The guns can pass through metal detectors and X-ray machines.
Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy and Florida Sen. Bill Nelson are also joining Schumer in the push to extend the national ban.
