NYers Brace For Effects Of Expiration Of Federal Unemployment Benefits

Federal unemployment benefits expire Saturday, and thousands of New Yorkers are bracing for the effects.

Congress failed to act on extending the benefits before its holiday break.

According to government data, 127,000 people across the state will be left without a benefit check.

Some analysts say that that could have adverse effects on the U.S. economy, with many families tightening their belts.

Lawmakers are hoping to get an extension of the benefits when they are back in session on January 7.

That could mean a huge legislative fight on Capitol Hill, with disagreements possible on how to pay for the benefits.

The White House says that the benefits help to keep over 11 million Americans above the poverty line.

President Barack Obama is pushing lawmakers to act quickly when they return.
