Bill de Blasio announced Sunday that former U.S. Attorney Zachary Carter will be the city’s new corporation counsel.
De Blasio made the latest addition to his cabinet at a press conference in downtown Manhattan.
Carter will step into Michael A. Cardozo’s shoes as the city’s top legal counsel and the head of one of the country’s largest public law firms.
The incoming mayor hopes that Carter, currently a partner at the law firm of Dorsey & Whitney and co-chair of the firm’s White Collar Crime and Civil Fraud division, will help bring about his much-vaunted vision of a more progressive New York.
He said that corporation counsel is among the city’s most important positions.
“It defends city employees, it fights to uphold our laws, protects the rights of every New Yorker,” de Blasio said. “And my vision for this office, as with all parts of government, is a progressive, activist corporation counsel’s office.”
“In advancing the city’s interests, we must always be mindful of our duty to seek fair outcomes that reflect our commitment to justice,” Carter said.
In 1993, Carter was appointed the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York after spending nearly 20 years embroiled in the New York legal system as an assistant U.S. attorney.
In his six years on the job, he dealt with cases as far-ranging as securities fraud to human trafficking.
The Rev. Al Sharpton released a statement Sunday, saying he is sure that Carter will serve the city with “utmost integrity, fairness and due diligence.”
