Bill Bratton doesn’t start as police commissioner until New Year’s Day, but some New Yorkers are already loudly voicing their opposition.
Protesters hit the streets of Harlem Friday to show their anger at mayor-elect Bill de Blasio for choosing Bratton as Ray Kelly’s replacement.
They say Bratton’s previous tenure as police commissioner should disqualify him from serving again.
Among those critics is a father whose son was killed by officers while Bratton led the department.
“Under William Bratton there was over 30 innocent unarmed people that were killed from 1994 to 1996 in New York City,” said Nicholas Heyward, Sr. “And Bill Bratton failed to hold any of those officers accountable.”
“Everybody in the community which I live in feels betrayed,” said protester Jose LaSalle. “My son Alvin, who was treated like he was an animal, feels betrayed because he believed him. A lot of people believed in de Blasio and the message he was saying. And to just do something like that, it took the faith away from us.”
In a statement, a spokesman for de Blasio’s transition team said the new administration is focused on rebuilding trust and communication between police and the communities across the city.
