James Dolan vowed last week that no coaching move or significant personnel changes are forthcoming, but the Knicks are moving closer to signing big man Jeremy Tyler, according to an NBA source.
The 6-10 Tyler was cut by the Knicks late in training camp while he still was rehabbing from September foot surgery, but he has averaged 18 points and 10.2 rebounds in six games for the Knicks’ D-League team in Erie.
The Knicks will have to cut a player from their 15-man roster to add Tyler, possibly guard Chris Smith. J.R. Smith’s brother’s $ 491,000 contract was fully guaranteed for the season when he made the opening night roster, and the Knicks have been accused of signing the younger Smith as part of a sibling package deal.
A source said the Knicks’ coaching staff would prefer to not jettison little-used center Cole Aldrich to add Tyler to the roster.
Chris Smith also spent time at Erie before point guards Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni went down recently with injuries, but the Louisville product has totaled just two minutes of mop-up duty in two games in the past week against Oklahoma City and Toronto.
Tyler, 22, made 62 appearances with Golden State and one with Atlanta over the previous two NBA seasons, averaging 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds in 10 minutes per game.
