William Monge-Betancourt, 24, is being sought for escaping from police custody along the Cross Bronx Expressway in Inwood on Friday. Police had pulled him over on the highway following a pursuit of about four miles.
A 23-year-old man arrested for having drugs in his car wrestled free from a cop and sprinted across the Cross Bronx Expressway in a daring bid to escape from police custody on Friday.
William Monge-Betancourt was last seen darting into traffic, police said. He was still at large as of late Saturday night, more than 24 hours after he gave cops the slip.
Cops tried to pull over Monge-Betancourt’s 2011 Honda Accord at about 10 p.m. Friday when they saw it speeding along Lexington Ave. near E. 126th St. in Harlem.
But Monge-Betancourt refused to stop, leading police on a chase that lasted for nearly four miles and wound up on the Cross Bronx Expressway.
Police finally got him to pull over on the westbound side of the highway near W. 181st St. in Inwood, NYPD officials said. Inside the car police found marijuana and the club drug Molly, police sources said.
The cops had just taken Monge-Betancourt into custody when he broke free from one of them — injuring the officer’s hand in the process — and ran off, police said.
A man who was a passenger in the car with Monge-Betancourt, identified as Eric Gonzalez, 24, of Morningside Heights, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of marijuana and narcotics, police said.
Police described Monge-Betancourt as Latino, about 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds.
Police ask anyone with information about Monge-Betancourt to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers tipline at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls are confidential.
