Dad made up story about stolen car with son inside: cops

A distracted Staten Island dad who was supposed to be watching his young son concocted an elaborate lie after the boy wandered out of the family’s home Sunday, telling cops someone stole his car with the child inside, authorities said.

Terry Liaros, 46, called police in a panic around 8:30 p.m., telling them that he had just returned from the grocery store when a thief stole his SUV with the boy sitting inside as he and his two older sons were bringing packages into their Craig Avenue home, cops said.

Police quickly began scouring their Tottenville neighborhood in search of the dad’s “stolen” Toyota 4-Runner before locating the empty vehicle around the nearby corner of Hecker and Lenhart streets about 15 minutes later.

Meanwhile, the boy was found on Hecker Street when a neighborhood resident noticed him wandering around the dark streets unattended and called police, cops said.

Liaros’ tall tale started to come undone when police found surveillance video showing him driving around the neighborhood about an hour before reporting the bogus car heist in an apparent effort to find the missing boy.

The dopey dad can be seen getting out of his vehicle periodically while looking around in search of his son before ditching the vehicle, sources said.

Liaros later confessed that he had lied.

He was arrested and charged with filing a false report, cops said. He was awaiting arraignment at the Staten Island Criminal Courthouse.
