Mara Hoffman’s Ganesh-emblazoned swimwear was big hit during Spring 2014 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week but has stirred outrage from Hindu groups.

A DAY after drawing ire from Hindu leaders over swimsuits emblazoned with the elephant head of Lord Ganesh, New York designer Mara Hoffman has pulled the clothing line from her website.

The $ 275 one-piece swimsuit, as well as a $ 194 minidress and a $ 185 nylon shirt with the likeness of the Hindu god of wisdom, were all removed from the couturier’s site by Monday morning, shortly after a report in the Daily News.

But the Ganesh gear is sill available through online dealers and upscale department stores like Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. “Those three big stores still have it,” said Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, which is based in Nevada. “I don’t know their relationship to Mara Hoffman, but if Mara Hoffman asks them to take it out, they will.”

Zed, who in December successfully appealed to Urban Outfitters to ditch socks featuring images of Ganesh, called on Hoffman to withdraw the line and apologize.

“We really have no comment here,” said a staffer who answered the phone Monday at Mara Hoffman’s Herald Square office.

A spokesperson for the designer didn’t return calls or emails.
