DiNapoli says two-thirds of schoolkids get low-quality arts education

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found that as many as two-thirds of the students his office surveyed received arts instruction below state guidelines.




City schoolkids are short-changed on their arts education, according to an audit by state Controller Thomas DiNapoli.

Many did not receive the required amount of hours of instruction while others were taught by non-certified teachers.


City school officials said DiNapoli’s conclusions were misguided and largely based on flawed documentation.


“We are committed to continuing to make sure that every students receive a high-quality arts education,” said Education Department spokesman Harry Hartfield.
