Arrests of panhandlers and peddlers in the subway have tripled since Bill Bratton became Police Commissioner.
Police statistics show 274 people were arrested between January, when Bratton took over the NYPD, and March 2.
Ninety people were arrested during the same period last year.
The NYPD says the crackdown comes because of increased complaints about panhandlers from riders.
Bratton has said he plans to ride the subway overnight in the coming weeks to get a better idea of the quality of life issues facing straphangers.
