Residents Cleared To Return To SoHo Apartment After Fears It Was Unstable

Residents in a Lower Manhattan neighborhood are back in their apartment building after it was evacuated Thursday afternoon.

The residents feared that their building had become unstable after noticing excessive shaking.

A neighbor called the Department of Buildings when her door wouldn’t open.

An inspector came to the building on Sixth Avenue and Spring Street and told everyone to evacuate.

Officials are blaming a condominium development next door that might have shifted the building’s foundation.

“I just arrived home to this, but there are some new cracks in the building, and we have been concerned about this for a while,” said one resident.

“We raised this very issue,” said another. “Here’s a tenement that’s nearly 100 years old, built on rubble. You’re building a 16-story next door that will come what they call kissing distance from my kitchen window. Sounds dangerous to me.”

The developer has yet to comment on the incident.
