Police are searching for a person of interest after a woman was raped in Little Italy early Monday morning as her 7-year-old daughter slept in the bed beside her.
The man is described as being 5’9″ tall and was last seen wearing a black knitted hat, black leather jacket and black pants.
Investigators say he entered an apartment on Mulberry Street through the fire escape and raped the 42-year-old victim at knifepoint.
“I’m 14 years in this area and this has never happened like this. That surprised me and surprised all of us. I know her long time, she’s a very night person, with the kids. When I came this morning and I saw this story, that was something unbelievable,” said one neighborhood resident.

Police say the woman’s daughter was not injured and had slept through the ordeal.
The attacker left through the front door.
