Authorities are investigating the death of a Baruch College freshman in what they believe was a hazing incident in the Poconos.
Police in Pennsylvania say on Sunday, 19-year-old Michael Deng, also known as Chun Hsien, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Doctors say Deng suffered major brain trauma and died a day later.
Police say they’re looking into a two hour gap between when they believe Deng was injured and when he was taken to the hospital.
Deng was one of four pledges who joined members of the Pi Delta Psi Asian American fraternity on the trip.
Police say the ritual that injured Deng involved blindfolding him and forcing him to carry a heavy item on his back while others tried to tackle him.
In a statement, Baruch College said it had no knowledge of the trip or that the fraternity was even rushing a pledge class.
“Pi Delta Psi did not request permission nor were they approved by Baruch College on this matter. Baruch has a zero tolerance policy regarding hazing,” said Christina Latouf, Chief Communications & Marketing Officer of Baruch College.
Students who spokes to NY1 were angered by the news.
“I’m surprised it’s Pi Delta Psi, I’ve heard good things about them,” said one student.
“It’s terrible that to get into something that means brotherhood resulted in that. Why do you have to prove yourself to call someone your friend or your brother?” said another.
“It’s upsetting to see anyone so young have so much ahead of them to have something like that happen to them for something that’s supposed to be a fun organization,” said a third.
School officials say they’ve launched an internal investigation and are cooperating with law enforcement.
