It’s cold outside and it’s only going to get worse. NY1’s Polly Kreisman talked with some workers in Harlem who couldn’t avoid the freezing temperatures.
A promoter in Harlem will stand outside on West 125th Street for eight hours, no matter what the temperature. He’s like many other workers.
“Occupations such as construction workers, police officers, MTA workers, sanitation workers, you got traffic officers and so forth that have to be out here, so it’s just another trade. I have to be out here to feed my family,” the promoter said.
Up on the elevated tracks of the No. 1 train, MTA workers took the cold in stride. Sort of.
“Freezing, that’s the word, freezing,” said one worker.
When asked what he wanted more than anything, he said, “A nice warm bath.”
“I love this job,” said one of his co-workers, laughing.
Subway riders were less enthusiastic about sitting outside.
“It’s very Christmassy, which is good, but other than that not a lot of fun,” said one rider.
“Oh my gosh, I would love to be in 85 weather on a beach, it’d be lovely,” said a second rider.
Back down on 125 Street we got this tip from an expert
“You put on extra layers of clothes, you know thermals, you know what I mean? You know hoodies and you come out here and you make your money for whatever hours you have to come out and stand for,” said a Harlem resident.
It’s supposed to be another very cold day on Friday, setting the stage for what meteorologist are calling a significant snow on Saturday.
