Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio announced another appointment to his administration Sunday, naming Gladys Carrion as his commissioner of the Administration For Children’s Services.
De Blasio made the announcement at the Henry Street Settlement in Manhattan.
De Blasio said that Carrion’s diverse experiences in working to help young people makes her a natural choice for the post.
“Her passion and concern for children has been seen throughout her career,” de Blasio said.
“Didn’t matter whether it was city government, state government, nonprofits, she’s devoted her whole life to our children.”
“The bottom line is that there is no greater responsibility, nothing more sacred, than protecting the lives of children,” Carrion said. “This is the crusade that I have fought for my entire career. It’s a mission I know that mayor-elect is dedicated to, and it’s something New York City can’t afford to get wrong.”
Carrion served previously with the city’s Department of Youth and Community Development, as well as the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, where she was credited with reforms to the juvenile justice system.
The Bronx native was also executive director of Inwood House, one of the city’s oldest youth service organizations.
