The Fire Department said it received a call just after noon that a person had fallen from an apartment tower on West 60th Street. When paramedics arrived, they found the body of the man, who was not immediately identified, and a child, who was in critical condition, the police said.
The child, who was also not identified, was taken to Roosevelt Hospital nearby, but pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The police said they believed the child was a boy who was either 3 or 4 years old.
Detectives and uniformed officers could be seen going in and out of 124 West 60th Street, the building from where investigators said they believed the man and boy may have fallen.
Manoj Notani, 36, who was leaving the building with his infant daughter, expressed shock at the deaths. “It’s hard to believe when it happens in your own building,” Mr. Notani said. The windows in the apartments have a bracket that prevents residents from opening them more than several inches, he said.
In March, a 44-year-old woman holding her 10-month-old boy jumped from the eighth floor of her apartment building in Harlem. The woman, Cynthia Wachenheim, a lawyer on child care leave from her job, left a suicide note. She died from the fall, but her son survived.
