“We regret that our marital relationship has come to an end,” the couple wrote in a joint statement issued on Christmas Eve by Mr. Spitzer’s spokeswoman, Lisa Linden.
“We have agreed not to make any other public statement on this subject,” the statement said.
Mr. Spitzer, 54, the scion of a wealthy real estate family, and Ms. Wall Spitzer, 55, a former corporate lawyer, had been living in separate apartments for months.
The couple, who met at Harvard Law School and have three daughters, were considered a consummate power duo until Mr. Spitzer abruptly resigned the governorship five years ago amid a prostitution scandal.
The image of an ashen-faced Ms. Wall Spitzer standing beside her husband as he announced his resignation prompted a national discussion about the role of political wives and even helped inspire a television series, “The Good Wife.”
This year, during Mr. Spitzer’s comeback bid for New York City comptroller, his wife was absent from his side on the campaign trail. Privately, Ms. Wall Spitzer told friends she would have preferred her husband not pursue another run for public office. Mr. Spitzer ultimately lost the election.
It was reported this week that Mr. Spitzer is romantically involved with Lis Smith, 31, a spokeswoman for Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio. She also served as Mr. Spitzer’s spokeswoman during the comptroller race.
Ms. Smith, who is single, has been viewed as a leading candidate to become Mr. de Blasio’s press secretary at City Hall. She has not appeared at the mayor-elect’s events since reports about her relationship with Mr. Spitzer emerged on Sunday.
“I respect Lis as a professional, but I also respect her right to privacy,” Mr. de Blasio said at a news conference on Monday. “So I’m not going to get any further into it.”
