The goal of a meeting Saturday between the head of city schools and charter school leaders was finding some common ground on a dividing topic.
Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña met with City Charter School Center CEO James Merriman and other charter school leaders in the Financial District.
In her first few months on the job, Farina has talked about wanting to shift public funding away from charter schools.
She says the meeting was a way of making inroads on a more constructive relationship.
“Many of them shared innovative ideas that they’re working on and we talked about how we might continue the conversation. What are some of the areas that we want to dollar. There were no decisions made today, no statements, no policy, but a lot of good will generated and a really good feeling that there was a lot of things we’re going to find common ground in,” Fariña said
“We were able to show I think that a lot of the things she cares about are the things we care about,” Merriman said.
Charter school advocates have been on edge since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office as his proposals would shift millions of dollars away from charter schools.
